UNCF COMMISSIONED STUDY REAFFIRMS THE IMPACT OF FISK UNIVERSITY ON LOCAL AND REGIONAL ECONOMY

In a recent study commissioned by UNCF (United Negro College Fund), research findings have concluded that Fisk University is a significant contributor to the economic growth and sustainability of the Nashville community, generating substantial economic returns year after year. HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities documents the significant economic contributions of Fisk University and the nation’s network of HBCUs by quantifying their impact on the economy, employment and increased earning power of their students.  The study was underwritten by Citi Foundation and the economic estimates were prepared by the University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth. FISK UNIVERSITY UNVEILS HISTORIC MARKER FOR THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS® 

The Fisk Jubilee Singers®, renowned for introducing negro spirituals to the world were honored on Wednesday, November 15 with a historic marker in front of Jubilee Hall to commemorate their departure from campus in 1871 to raise funds for Fisk University. As one of the world’s foremost a cappella ensembles and the premier performers of the Negro spiritual, The Fisk Jubilee Singers® specialize in performing songs originally sung by slaves prior to the Civil War. Under the leadership of Dr. Paul Kwami, the Singers have performed in renowned venues around the world and have been awarded a National Medal of Arts.   

JAZZY 88.1 WFSK RECOGNIZED AS BEST JAZZ STATION IN NASHVILLE

The Nashville Scene recently released their readers’ and writers’ choices for Best of Nashville 2017. Among those recognized in the Arts, Culture, and Music category was Jazzy 88.1 WFSK as the writers’ choice for Best Jazz Station for 2017.  The Nashville Scene noted the important range of perspectives, including the homegrown Generations in Jazz show hosted by Rahsaan Barber, the Deeper Grooves Radio Show and the nationally syndicated NPR program Jazz Night in America.  Read more

SAVE THE DATE: ANNUAL CHRISTMAS AT FISK CONCERT SET FOR NOVEMBER 30


On Thursday, November 30, Fisk University will host the annual Christmas at Fisk concert at 7pm in the Fisk Memorial Chapel. Admission is free and open to the public.
Christmas at Fisk will feature a Jazz Ensemble, the Fisk University Choir, student and faculty soloists, and the world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers®. For information, please contact Dr. Philip Autry at pautry@fisk.edu or 615-329-8702.


BARBARA LANDERS BOWLES '68 HONORED WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD BY MARQUIS WHO’S WHO
Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, has announced Barbara Landers Bowles as the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. A retired investment executive and founder of The Kenwood Group, Bowles boasts more than 25 years of experience in investment management, securities analysis, and investor relations, Most recently, she was recognized for her service as the Chairperson of the Fisk University Board of Trustees. Bowles holds a bachelor's degree from Fisk University and a master's degree from the University of Chicago.
DIANNE JEMISON POLLARD, PH.D., '70 NAMED HONORS COLLEGE DEAN AT TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
Texas Southern University has announced the appointment of Dianne Jemison Pollard, Ph.D. as Dean of the TSU Honors College. An award-winning stage director who has directed over fifty productions, Jemison Pollard served as Professor of Theatre and Theatre Area Coordinator in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. Jemison Pollard holds a bachelor’s degree from Fisk University, master’s degrees from both The University of Wisconsin at Madison and The Catholic University of America and a doctorate from Texas Southern University. 


ERIC MOORE, PH.D. '87 NAMED DIRECTOR OF EDGEWOOD CHEMICAL BIOLOGICAL CENTER
The Army’s Edgewood Chemical Biological Center has announced that Eric Moore, Ph.D. has been appointed as Director. Prior to his appointment, Moore served as the Director of Research and Technology at ECBC. In his role, Moore will oversee the research and development efforts related to non-medical components of the nation’s chemical-biological defense capabilities. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree from Fisk University and a doctorate in neurophysiology from Meharry Medical College.
KANDACE HARRIS ’10 NAMED NASHVILLE TOP 30 UNDER 30 RECIPIENT BY CYSTIC FIBROSIS ASSOC.
Kandace R. Harris '10, has been named to the coveted Nashville's Top 30 under 30 listing, presented by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Middle Tennessee (CFFMT). Announced annually, the CFFMT recognizes Nashville’s thirty of the most active and influential young professionals and philanthropists under the age of 30.  Currently serving as a Branch Manager of the Regions Bank Corporation, Harris holds a bachelor’s degree from Fisk University and a master’s degree from Lipscomb University.

    George Gardiner ’63 – of Bloomfield Township, MI passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017. A private memorial service was held at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA.
