A Message from the ChairJanine Smith '84
Good Afternoon Alumni!
Seeing the many alumni returning to campus for Reunion Weekend and Commencement was a joy. As always, spending time with fellow Fiskites was uplifting. If you use social media, you can see many photos of the festivities that alumni shared. We also provide links to many of the events in today’s newsletter’s “I Am Fisk” section. Be sure to check them out. Thanks to all who contributed to creating a spectacular event.
The reunion gala continues to reach new heights. Twenty-eight new GAAFU life members were acknowledged during the event, and we celebrate the growth of our alumni association. Over $1,000,000 was presented by reunion classes at the gala, with the class of 1958 contributing more than $540,000! Alumni donations will help the university in its ongoing efforts to serve its extraordinary students. The fiscal year continues through June 30th, so you can still donate here.
Almost two hundred graduates received their Fisk degrees during the commencement exercises. They were also energized by the commencement address delivered by Grant Hill, the celebrated athlete, businessman, and philanthropist. We congratulate them and welcome their involvement with the alumni association.
If you know of any Fiskite that did not complete their Fisk degree, please suggest they contact the university to learn about the “Finish with Fisk” program that offers options to complete their degree at Fisk. The program has been in place since 2019 and has seen many successful completions of degrees at Fisk by our friends and classmates. We look forward to celebrating even more!
We also salute those who achieved Golden or Silver Sons & Daughters alumni status and were celebrated during special luncheons. In a unique ceremony, the Golden Class of 1973 and the graduates of 2023 partnered to create a time capsule that will be opened in 2073, when this year’s graduates celebrate becoming Golden Sons & Daughters. Read more about the time capsule in our feature article.
Please take the time to review the entirety of our newsletter. The Membership Section of the newsletter conveys how members make a difference. We invite you to join GAAFU and become active in the recruitment and social activities of your local GAAFU constituent association. Our “I Am Fisk” section features photos of reunion and commencement activities that will brighten your day. In “For the Culture,” we highlight the Fisk Gallery exhibition on African Modernism in America” which is now on tour following a successful run at the Carl Van Vechten Gallery.
We strive to bring you information about many of the positive things occurring at the university, alumni achievements, and reflection pieces about Fisk that will reinforce your pride in being a Fiskite. We welcome your ideas and suggestions at goodafternoonalumni@gmail.com.
Fisk Forever!
